AIS Education Centre is a Brisbane-based international education consultancy specialising in the placement of international students into Australian educational institutions and work experience positions. We also frequently assist our clients to locate high quality accommodation.

Generally, accommodation providers come in the following forms:

・ Family Homestay (Husband, wife and at least one child)
・ Single Mother Homestay (Mother and at least one child)
・ Share Homestay (Sharing house or unit with someone who “*hosts”)
・ Share Accommodation (Sharing a house or unit with someone who does not “host”)
・ Private Accommodation (provides fully self contained private accommodation such as a small apartment. Flat or granny flat)

*A host is usually someone who collects payment to provide specific services.
In exchange for a payment of approximately $190.00 per week, a host would generally be required to provide as a minimum:

・ A cheerful, positive, supportive and clean environment that maximises the students’ potential at school
・ A participatory and interactive attitude toward school activities
・ A clean lockable bedroom with at least a bed, linen, desk, lamp and wardrobe/drawers
・ Access to clean toilet and shower facilities including towels
・ Full, healthy breakfast and dinner (freshly cooked dinner each night) and 3 meals (Including lunch) on weekends
・ Assistance with getting know the local transportation systems
・ Occasional lifts to school activities

If you are planning to collect payment for hosting, you should be aware that it is a serious commitment and requires that you actually provide that level of service commensurate with the amount you are being paid.

Hosts who fail to provide the appropriate level of service are immediately removed from the pool of accommodation providers and will not be given further opportunity to participate.

There are, on occasion, those who believe that hosting an international student is “easy money”. It is not and generally requires patience, perseverance and diligent attention to the emotional state of the student.
