Education in Australia for visitors from overseas is highly regulated
and controlled by the Australian government to ensure the highest
possible level of quality and service. This page will assist you
to learn more about Australian education (the education system in
Australia).
The
ESOS Act
The provision of education and training services to overseas students
in Australia is regulated by the Department of Education, Science
and Training through the "Education Services for Overseas Students
Act" and associated legislation. The purpose of the legislation
is to protect the interests of people coming to Australia on student
visas, by providing tuition and financial assurance and by ensuring
a nationally consistent approach to provider registration. The legislation
also seeks to ensure the integrity of the industry through visa-related
reporting requirements. Under an established "Code of Practice"
education providers in Australia are required to provide a consistant,
high level of education and support to international students.
Universities
There are forty-three Australian universities. They are both teaching
and research institutions. A full range of academic and professional
disciplines is offered with awards ranging from associate diploma
to doctorates. Many
universities have a multi-campus structure, with each campus specialising
in particular disciplines. Regional universities, some offering
specialised courses, provide a full tertiary experience with students
residing on campus and participating in local activities. The standard,
design and diversity of education offered by Australian universities
are among the most effective in the world. Typically an undergraduate
degree takes at least three years to complete, longer for honours
or double degrees. For more information on Australian universities,
please ask your Aviation Education Centre counsellor. Click here

Vocational
("technical & further") education
Vocational Education and Training (VET) / Technical and Further
Education (TAFE) institutions provide courses with a strong vocational
focus and application such as aviation studies, travel, tourism,
graphic design and many others. Fees are charged for these courses
and vary between institutions and states. Some VET / TAFE courses
are offered at degree level with the majority being at diploma or
associate diploma level. For more information on the VET / TAFE
system and tuition fees, please ask your AIS Education Centre counsellor.
Private
Colleges
Private colleges deliver an excellent range of award and non-award
courses throughout Australia including English language. These colleges
are required to meet the same quality assurance standards as government
institutions and universities. Most private colleges are members
of one of the following industry organisations.
| ACPET |
ACPET is the Australian Council for Private Education
and Training - the national industry association for independent
providers of post-compulsory education and training, for Australian
and international students, including: Higher Education, Vocational
Education and Training, English Language Courses, Senior Secondary
Studies, Foundation Studies. The ACPET Mission is to enhance
quality, choice, innovation and diversity in Australian education
and training for individual, national and global development
and work pro-actively and co-operatively with government, education
and training providers, industry and community organisations,
in order to ensure that vocational and higher education and
training services provide choice and diversity and well-targeted,
appropriately delivered courses which are widely accessible
and of high quality. |
| NEAS |
The National ELICOS Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) is Australia's
official English language training accreditation system. NEAS
is internationally renowned as world's best practice in the
regulation and quality assurance of English language tuition.
Many other countries have sought to emulate Australia's NEAS
system. Under NEAS, private and publicly funded institutions
must meet the same rigorous standards. NEAS is a highly-regarded
national accreditation scheme for English language teaching
centres that sets standards for: class sizes; the professional
qualifications of teachers; approved curriculum, teaching methods
and materials; accommodation services provided by the college;
orientation programs on arrival; organised social and cultural
activities; welfare counselling. |
| English Australia |
English Australia is a group of about 65 colleges working
to high professional standards set by the ELICOS Association,
the association of centres teaching English to international
students in Australia. English Australia colleges give a guarantee
of quality and fee security. They have modern facilities usually
including language laboratories, video and library facilities. |
